Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup E, Series III: Scrapbooks document Senator Russell's 1930 campaign for governor of Georgia; the thirty-eight years of his Senate career, 1933-1971; and posthumous stories. There is also an almost complete record of the entire Russell family, from weddings to deaths and even clips of nieces' and nephews' school honors. The scrapbooks were maintained by the office staff (several were compiled by family members) and include clippings from newspapers and magazines, including news and feature items, editorials, cartoons, photographs, and mementos. See also scrapbooks in the papers of Senator Russell's mother, Ina Dillard Russell, and his aunt, Addie Day Russell.

The Annie Beth Abney Collection of Nathaniel E. Harris Research Files consists of photographs and correspondence gathered by Abney while writing a master's thesis at the University of Georgia on Nathaniel Harris who served as Governor of Georgia from 1915 to 1917. Prior to his term as governor he also served in the Georgia House of Representatives and Senate, and as a judge in the Superior Court of the Macon Circuit. Harris was an attorney by profession. The photographs document Harris family gravesites and Governor Harris's affiliation with the Mulberry Street Methodist Church (Macon, GA) where he was an active member for fifty years. Correspondence in the collection includes letters written by Governor Harris; Warren Roberts, a fellow church member; and Governor Harris's son, Walter Harris. The subject matter of the letters centers on Harris's church activities and personal family matters dated 1866 (copy) and 1957.

Lamartine Griffin Hardman Papers, Series IX: Scrapbooks consist primarily of newspaper clippings kept by Mrs. Hardman and office staff on Governor Hardman's political career. The earliest scrapbooks contain clippings on the Hardman family, Hardman's medical career, and his early political career in the House and Senate. Later scrapbooks document Mrs. Hardman's activities as first lady and her interests after her husband's death in 1937. Mrs. Hardman's personal scrapbooks contain nuptial announcements for her four children and souvenirs from her 1953 world tour with the General Federation of Women's Clubs. There are also duplicate, loose newspaper clippings.

Richard B. Russell, Jr. Oral History Project includes The collection consists of 175 oral history interviews relating to the personal and political life of Richard B. Russell. Interviewees include members of the Russell family, his staff and interns, other senators and public figures, and friends. The primary interviewer was Hugh Cates, a public relations manager at Southern Bell and secretary of the Russell Foundation (1977-1981). Most of the interviews were recorded between 1971 and 1979, but the majority during 1971 after Senator Russell's death. Other interviewers outside of the Russell Foundation Oral History Project include: William Stueck, Karen Kelly, Barboura Raesly, Robert G. Stephens, Jr., Dwight L. Freshley, Tom Jackson, Angus Hepburn, and Russell Library staff. Interviews provide insight into Senator Russell's political career as State Representative, Governor, and U.S. Senator, his views on various topics such as civil rights and Vietnam, and his personality and family life. The collection consists of papers of Joseph E. Brown from 1823-1895 and includes correspondence, letter books, tax returns, speeches, and diaries. It contains official correspondence and letterbooks (1858-1863) as Governor of Georgia which are particularly strong in information regarding Georgia's secession and involvement in the Civil War and includes such correspondents as Howell Cobb, Alexander H. Stephens, and other Confederate government officials. Also included are an 1864 speech of Howell Cobb, a speech (1868) made by Brown regarding Reconstruction politics, and a manuscript copy (1864) of Brown's pamphlet concerning Benjamin H. Hill's notes on Reconstruction. The collection also contains diaries of Franklin P. Brown (1868), Joseph Mackey Brown (1867, 1874, 1876), and Elijah A. Brown (1882, Jan. only).

Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup E, Series V: Artifacts include Russell's Senate office furnishings, the chair he used on the Senate Floor, his campaign ephemera, cartoons and artwork, and his official and personal gifts. Of significant interest is his childhood baseball card collection; there are approximately 1100 tobacco cards dating from the period 1911-1913, and most are in very good condition. Throughout his public service career, Russell received many plaques, citations, proclamations, honorary degrees, resolutions, and presentation certificates. Some of the more prestigious were honorary degrees from Oglethorpe University and John Marshall University, the James Forrestal Award, the Mississippi Distinguished Civilian Service Award, the Great American Award, and others from military, agricultural, business, and civic groups.

Subject content relates to international, national, state and local (Augusta and Atlanta-Fulton County) politics and to society in general, and features such topics as individual politicians, world leaders, the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam conflict, and the Cold War. Lamartine Griffin Hardman Papers, Series III: Political files are divided into two subseries. The General files include correspondence, speeches, financial records, and newspaper clippings relating to Governor Hardman's gubernatorial campaigns. There are also fragmentary accounts of the 1894 campaign for State Senator. The most prolific records are from the 1926 and 1928 gubernatorial campaigns. The County files were kept in the campaign years 1926 and 1928 and are arranged alphabetically then chronologically by county. The majority of correspondence consists of mass-mailings to the electorate. There is also some correspondence between the candidate and his supporters.

The S. Ernest Vandiver, Jr. Papers consist of office files and personal papers including correspondence, speeches, press releases, reports from state agencies, news stories, editorials, photographs, and scrapbooks from Vandiver's career as governor of Georgia (1959-1963), lieutenant governor of Georgia (1955-1958), lawyer, and from his post-career years. There are also materials related to Vandiver's campaign activities, including his campaign for governor of Georgia in 1966 and for the United States Senate in 1972. Series I. Governor's Office Files, 1959-1962, contains Vandiver's unofficial papers. His official gubernatorial papers are located at the Georgia Department of Archives and History in Atlanta, Georgia.

The collection consists of reminiscences of Wilson Lumpkin, written entirely in his hand, in 1852. The reminiscences mainly highlight his political career including service as a U.S. Representative; Governor of Georgia; United States Bureau of Indian Affairs, Commissioner to execute the Cherokee Treaty of 1835; and U.S. Senator. Besides the personal reminiscences, the volumes include copies of official correspondence as Governor and Commissioner, and speeches and remarks as U.S. Senator. The reminiscences describe state and national political matters and include extensive information regarding the native American Indians, particularly the Cherokees, and their subsequent removal to the West.

The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup C, Series IV. Early Office reflects Russell's first years as a United States senator and reveals him as a strong supporter of New Deal legislation. Some gubernatorial papers were transferred to Russell's senate office and are found in this series. This series contains correspondence with some printed materials and is incomplete. There are few files documenting Russell's office during the first eleven years, especially from 1938 to 1943, the main series for this time period are Early Office, Political, Political Patronage, Personal, and a few files in General. Any additional non-textual materials originally filed with papers were removed for preservation purposes and improved access. These materials include photographs, audiovisual items, scrapbooks, vertical files, memorabilia, and books.

Hal Henderson is a retired professor of political science from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) in Tifton, Ga. His main research field is mid-twentieth century Georgia politics. The oral history interviews in this collection are the result of research Henderson conducted for two books, one on Ellis Arnall and the other on Ernest Vandiver. This collection also contains eight VHS recordings from a symposium on Georgia governors directed by Hal Henderson and Gary Roberts that was held at ABAC in 1985.

The collection consists of genealogy, land documents, correspondence, financial papers, writings, photographs, artifacts, and printed material. The correspondence includes letters to William J. Northen regarding the establishment of the town of Fitzgerald, Georgia; letters regarding an apparent scandal involving the Farmers' Alliance and Leonidas Livingston; William J. Northen's letters home as he traveled around Georgia in 1907 promoting racial harmony; and two Civil War letters from brothers William and John Henry Neel of the 15th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Company K. The writings contain a journal by William J. Northen in which he writes of his trip to Tallulah Falls, speeches at Mercer University, his 21st birthday, death of his brother, and a letter to his sister regarding conditions at the end of the Civil War. Farm accounts are also included in the journal. Also of interest are slave documents and bills of sale; receipts from Mercer University and the Georgia Baptist Convention when Peter Northen was treasurer; Ruth Northen's photo album containing University of Georgia photographs from 1911-1912 and other travel photographs; and an 1801 indenture between the Catawba Indians and Thomas Neel for land in York County, South Carolina. The following items were separated from the collection: walking cane without the handle and one square back wooden chair with cane seat is housed in Organic storage.
